Maya and the Three

I am so glad that this series exists. I enjoyed The Book of Life (which depicted a day of the dead story pre-Coco) and am happy to see that Jorge Gutierrez is getting more recognition and space to craft his vision. His stories have a lot of heart, and express Mexican culture lovingly, comically, and authentically.

I remember one writer or critic basically saying that it was pretty wild that a children’s animation could address difficult issues such as infidelity and death. I think that it’s really beautiful that Gutierrez is pushing the genre in this way, to be able of depicting more real life issues. I believe that children are capable of understanding quite a lot- you just have to tailor the explanation to them, in a developmentally appropriate way.

Check out the series on Netflix! It’s a light hearted escape, to a fantastical world with many nods to indigenous mythology, funny Latino culture references, and lots of girl power.
